WILMINGTON — We are saddened to announce Charlie M. Futrell, 80, of Wilmington, NC, passed away March 28, 2023 at Lower Cape Fear Life Care after a brave and determined fight against cancer.
Charlie was born August 31, 1942 in Duplin County to Willie and Mary Futrell and graduated from Chinquapin High School.
Charlie attended Forsyth Technical Institute and earned a degree in Diesel Mechanics. He was then honored to serve in the United States military with the Navy Seabees in Vietnam. He retired from Bell South after 30 years of service.
Charlie is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Jeanette, daughter Kristie Anderson (Scott), son Jason Morton, two granddaughters Hannah and Ella, sister Jackie Blanchard and sister-in-law Hettie Massey. His extended family included many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Charlie was known around town as the Wrightsboro Collard Man for his delicious and beautiful collards and could be found working on lawnmowers, envisioning and building his latest DIY project, fishing, volunteering with the Seabees and helping neighbors in need through the WBC Handyman Ministry which included building ramps among other home improvement needs. He was also a proud member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America Island X5 – Cape Fear, Vietnam Veterans of America and American Legion.
He was a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church, was admired and loved by all that knew him and will be tremendously missed.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the following individuals: Arnold Murray, Barbara Hill, Kathy Dombroski, Barbara Blandine, Cindy Work, Dr. Dubinsky along with the wonderfully caring nurses at Novant, Zimmer Center and the Radiation department who treated him with such kindness and as if he was the only patient there that day.
In lieu of flowers donations may be directed in Charlie’s name to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington, NC.
