OAK ISLAND — Marvin Edward Gregory, 86, of Oak Island, NC formerly of Charlotte, & Knoxville, TN, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023 in the Lower Cape Fear Life Care, “Brunswick House”, Bolivia, NC.
Born in Mecklenburg County, NC on December 15, 1937 and was the son of the late Dorothy Mosley Gregory and Cole L. Gregory, Sr.
Marvin retired from a long career as a truck driver working with, PIE, Ryder and Roadway. He was very excited to retire at Oak Island where he loved the music, beach and many friends, especially Charlie, his friend since he was 5 years old. He was an avid gardener and loved nothing more than finding plants at the Lowes Clearance Section. He also enjoyed sharing his plants with his family and friends. One of his many prides was his Koi Pond! He might give you one but if would be one of his smallest! Marvin also enjoyed looking for steals and deals at Habitat and could not wait to tell his brother what he had found. He also loved to tell you what you should do! Rhonda referred to him as Marvelous Marvin, a title he wore with pride.
Survivors include his son Mitchell Gregory of Knoxville, TN and Eddie Gregory of Greenville, TN; Significant other Rhonda Shears of Oak Island; Siblings Cole L. Gregory. Jr and wife Mary Ann of Southport, NC and Carolyn Penninger of Charlotte. He was like a second father to Krista (Rhonda’s daughter). He has many nephews and nieces that he loved to share his stories of life with. He was Papa Marvin to many especially to Rhonda’s family. It did not take you long to learn not to ask for his advice unless you had hours to spend with him.
A celebration of Life will be on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. in Marvin’s back yard. We are really hoping his flowers will be blooming.
The family would like to thank New Hanover Regional Hospital and Hospice at Bolivia for the love and support they have shown the family and Marvin during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to a charity of your choice.
Online condolences are encouraged and may be sent to the family here.
