OAK ISLAND — John Norman McDowell, age 88, of Oak Island, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023.
Mr. McDowell was born November 19, 1934 in Southport, son of the late William and Norma McDowell. John was a native of Southport, where he grew up playing basketball and spending time on the beach. After graduating from Southport High School and later Catawba College he joined the US Air Force where he served in Europe.
After the Air Force, John went to work in civil service with the US Army Corp of Engineers where he was a First Mate on a dredge crew. Later, he went to work at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point where he worked until his retirement. John was a Master Mason and member of the Pythagoras Lodge.
He is survived by his son, John W. McDowell and wife Elizabeth; a granddaughter, Madisen McDowell; and a sister-in-law, Mary McDowell. Mr. McDowell was preceded in death by his brother, William E. McDowell.
