WILMINGTON — Wayne Richard Chalmers, 72, passed away January 11, 2023, at his home in Wilmington, NC.
He was born to Calvin and Dorothy Chalmers on Halloween, 1950. He grew up on Long Island, NY and lived there as a young adult. During the Vietnam War he served honorably in the US Army, stationed in Turkey. Later he moved to Wilmington, NC where he completed technical training in electronics at Cape Fear Community College. He worked for the City of Wilmington, Traffic Engineering Department until his retirement in 2015.
He had a love of cars and engines, drag racing his mustang in his younger years. He was good at fixing things that were broken, both mechanical and electrical. He enjoyed dancing and at one time was an active member of the Wilmington singles club. In his later years he tended to keep to himself, but he had a kind soul and quiet demeanor.
Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Cal Chalmers. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Chalmers; sister, Karen Selz, her husband Mark; uncle, George Chalmers; nephew, Matthew Selz; niece, Kimberly Selz Martin, her husband William, and their three children.
A celebration of his life and inurnment will be held at Wesleyan Chapel UMC at a future date.
