Steve McWilliams, 77

WILMINGTON — From a past experience of kayaking in the Grand Canyon to falling in love with ocean kayaking in the Masonboro Island/Carolina Beach area. Road trips and enjoying coastal life with his wife of 46 years, Lee Ann, hiking and camping the area with his son, Landon, conversing and laughing with his daughter-in-law, Hannah, enjoying boating, fishing, the beach and sunshine with his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, Madeline, James, and Maggie who called him “Bop.”

He was a unique, adventurous, loving, and authentic guy with a profound love for his family and the ocean along with his “Old Salt” hat define Steve McWilliams, 68, who passed on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

A native of Wisconsin, he was born April 27, 1954 – as a son of the late Dale and Naomi McWilliams and spent 43 years serving with Duke Energy.

He is survived by his wife, Lee Ann; son, Landon (Hannah) McWilliams; daughter, Madeline (James) and granddaughter, Maggie Varner; brothers, Tom (Allison) McWilliams and Jim (Carmen) McWilliams. He was preceded by their infant daughter, Karlie Ann.

He will be remembered and honored at the end of April with further details to be shared at a later date.

In memory of his passion for the ocean, nature, and wildlife and preserving it for future generations, memorials are requested for North Carolina Coastal Land Trust.
