Steven John West, 68

SOUTHPORT — Steven John West, age 68, of Southport, North Carolina passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

Steve was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on January 23, 1954. He grew up in Weymouth, MA with his late mother and father, Mildred and Glyn West, and his surviving brother, Glyn. For much of his working life, he served as an electrical field technician for Eversource Energy. In that time, Steve met the love of his life, Janis. Their families blended together creating an endless chain of memories of love, joy, and happiness. These memories were born from their many family adventures; traveling to places both around the country and all over the world; and from even the small seemingly insignificant moments that are still looked back upon fondly. Of their many travel destinations over the years, Bermuda had always been a special place for Steve and Jan. There they shared in their mutual love of the calm and blissful serenity of the ocean. Steve and Jan eventually retired and made their new home in North Carolina. There the happiness they both enjoyed never faded. Their days were filled with peace, relaxation and the company of good friends.

Steve was born and raised a man of God and his faith only continued to grow deeper over the years. His faith filled him with a strength of spirit that guided him through his journey with pancreatic cancer. Despite his unfortunate diagnosis in November of 2020, his faith, empathy, and love for his family never wavered. Ever selfless, he always put others before himself even in the face of his own immense hardship. Steve was surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends in the days before his passing. Having felt this love and hearing God’s call, Steve passed away peacefully at home with Janis and son, Steven, present in quiet witness. Steve and his family will be forever grateful to Liberty Hospice for the remarkable lengths they went to ensuring Steve’s comfort, dignity, and peace at end of life.

Steve has always been a light in people’s lives, and his light will continue to shine down on us from above.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Janis West; three devoted children, Steven T. West and wife Mallary, George Leehan, and Jennifer Leehan; five grandchildren, Ryan West, Camden West, Alyssa Leehan and fiancee CJ Palmer, Nicholas Carbone, and Liliana Leehan; a great-grandson, Charlie Palmer; his brother, Glyn Edward West and wife Lucy; and several caring cousins. Steve was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Karla Leehan, with whom he has rejoined through the Father in Heaven.

The funeral mass will be held at noon on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport. The family will have visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the West family here.
