
HAMPSTEAD — Joy Crumpler Walton, 83, of Hampstead, NC passed away Thursday, June 2, 2022, at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice of Wilmington, NC.
Joy was born and raised in Salemburg, NC, or “God’s Country” as she referred to it. Joy graduated from Watts School of Nursing in Durham, NC and found her calling at the V.A. Hospital in Durham, assisting with open heart surgeries until she retired. Joy also served in the Army Reserves, in a MASH unit, for 25 years. She retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Joy was preceded in death by parents Robert D. Crumpler and Elsie Autry Crumpler; a brother, Robert “Bobby” Nathan Crumpler; daughter-in-law Erin Wood, wife of K.T; and husband John Noel Walton of Durham.
Joy and John enjoyed travel with friends, dancing, camping with their children, attending any sporting event involving UNC, and “The Beach Life”.
Survivors include her daughter, Jessica Wood Sasser and husband William “Don” Sasser of Greenville and Hampstead, NC; son, Kelvin Thales Wood, Jr. of Roxboro, NC; grandson, Bradley Nathan Wood of Roxboro, NC; stepson, Jeff Walton and wife Susan of Chapel Hill, NC; step-grandchildren, Zack Walton and wife Hannah of Waxhaw, NC and Nick Walton of Morrisville, NC; and her brother, Rayford Graham Crumpler.
