LELAND — Joan Leslie Murray was born on June 21st, 1955, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. Born to English immigrants, Joan was raised with her 3 brothers and 2 sisters on a farm just outside Moose Jaw.
Although Joan is known for her bright smile and warm hospitality, she is most recognized for her surviving a skydiving accident in September of 1999. Her survival was nothing short of a miracle and her story is still shared on social media today. Joan enjoyed baking, working in the yard, walking on the beach, trips to Costco and spending time with her family. Joan took great joy in her beloved grandson Henry. She took the time to make everyone feel special and loved.
Joan had an amazing career in banking that extended over 20 years. Working her way up from teller, to branch manager, Joan retired as a Sr. VP at Bank of America.
She is survived by her life partner, Kelly Ahlgren and twin daughters Carmen Bowes and Arriane Sitter. Carmen and her husband Andrew reside in Greensboro, NC. Arriane and her husband Richard along with their son Henry Sitter (4) reside in Leland, NC.
Joan passed away in her home on Monday, May 23rd surrounded by her daughters and partner. She battled cancer for the past 29 months and is finally free of her pain. She fought the courageous fight and will be missed by so many loved ones.
A celebration of life is planned for July 2, 2022. The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare (Hospice).
