HAMPSTEAD — Dorothy “Dorry” Rhett Gore departed this life from her long-time residence at Woodbury Wellness of Hampstead, NC on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. She is now free of pain and in a better place. Dorry’s family and her many friends were always able to feel the warmth of Dorry’s love and friendship. She made people comfortable. She was socially graceful. A beautiful and most excellent host, she enjoyed being with her friends and made any special occasion more joyful. Many friends will remember Dorry from warm summer evening get-togethers on the porch at the Carolina Yacht Club. For those who knew her well, the holidays were a fun family time and Dorry always made them more special by virtue of her presence.
She was the daughter of the late Haskell Smith Rhett, Jr. (of Wilmington, NC) and John Monroe Council, Jr. (of Lake Waccamaw, NC). Dorry is survived by her mother Dorothy Sutherland Council of Cumming, GA; her son Owen Wright Gore of Hampstead, NC; and siblings Haskell S. Rhett III (Connie) of Townsend, TN; Mary Rhett Gottschalg (John) of Cumming, GA; and Katharine Rhett Gallotta (Steve) of Suffolk, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorry worked for many years at the Port of Wilmington, NC in the shipping industry.
Dorry’s family wishes to thank all her friends and frequent visitors especially Meg Davenport and Cathy Freeman whose visits through the years always brightened her day. The holiday decorations, the hats, the horns, the presents, the hot dogs – you guys really made a difference. Thank you to Woodbury Wellness of Hampstead, NC for taking good care of Dorry.
