Kathryn (Katie) Demaree Diggs Meyers, 41

WILMINGTON — Kathryn (Katie) Demaree Diggs Meyers (41), passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCare Center in Wilmington, NC, following a long battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Katie was born on August 5, 1980, in Columbia, MD, to the late Charles C. Diggs, Jr. and Jayne Carithers Diggs.  She attended Elementary, Middle and High School in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS).  She graduated from Atholton High School in 1998. In her early years, Katie found her natural expression, through ballet, competitive gymnastics, modern dance, and cheer.

After high school she attended the University of Maryland, where as a member of the cheer team won the NCAA Division I Women’s Cheer Championship.  She graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.  Upon graduation, Katie taught third grade at Clarksville Elementary School in HCPSS for three years.  She was a talented and well-loved teacher, as well as a coach for a local high school cheer squad.

On August 12, 2007, Katie married James (Jayme) Robert Meyers on the beach in Avon, NC in the Outer Banks.  They resided in Baltimore, MD where they began their family with the birth of Charleigh in 2009.  Shortly after, the family moved to Wilmington, NC and welcomed daughters Piper in 2011 and Quinn in 2013.

Katie taught fitness classes for adults, including Body Atack, Pink Gloves, and Silver Sneakers at the Wilmington Athletic Club.

Katie continued her studies with a specialty in Early Childhood Language and Literacy Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she earned a Master of Education in 2017.  She resumed her teaching career as an Instructional Assistant at Codington Elementary School.

Upon receiving her cancer diagnosis, she gave up her teaching job to give more attention to her daughters.  As she battled cancer, she was proud to have also completed her yoga certification.

Katie will always be remembered for her abiding love and support of her daughters.  She will also be remembered for her excellence in education, both as a student and a teacher, her love of animals, her love of sunflowers and orchids, her love of the beach and palm trees, and for her warm and welcoming friendship.  Her profound strength and perseverance in the face of her cancer battle serves as an inspiration for everyone who knows her.

Surviving along with Jayme, Charleigh, Piper and Quinn, are her mother Jayne Diggs of Columbia, MD, brothers Christopher Diggs of West Palm Beach, FL and Cameron Diggs and family of Columbia, MD.  Additional family members include, Aunt Elaine Diggs, of Columbia, MD, Uncle John Carithers and family, and Aunt Rita Carithers and family both in IN.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 11:00 am, First Presbyterian Church, 125 South 3rd Street, Wilmington, NC with a reception following at the church.
