CAROLINA BEACH — Gary Colon Walters, age 77, son of Paul L. Walters Sr. and Sarah N. Jenkins was born in Fayetteville, NC on April 9, 1944. He passed away peacefully on January 27, 2022, at his come in Carolina Beach, NC.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Paul L. Walters Jr. of Fayetteville, NC and his sister, Barbara Ann Burke of Fayetteville, NC.
Gary’s greatest accomplishment was his family, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon Henderson Walters. Daughters: Kimberly Walters Sasser, Pamela Walters Smith (Steve), Amber Walters Smith (Charles), and Courtney Walters Barrett (Michael). His loving grandchildren: Jordan Sasser Carpenter (Brendan), Christopher Daniel Sasser (Brooke), Lesley Neister Fisher (Harley), Cody Edward Burns, Bryce Michael Barrett, Brooklyn Grace Barrett. Great grandchildren: Madyson Elaine Fisher, Isabella Rose Carpenter, Willow Ruby Carpenter, and Baby Horne, coming soon. Gary is survived by one brother Billy M. Walters (Louise) of Wilmington, NC.
Gary was a quiet, yet strong man of faith. A man who would do anything at any cost to protect his family and his country. Gary proudly served his country, spending December 1966 – December 1967 in Vietnam. He completed his tour in the US Army with an Honorable Discharge.
Gary was a man who enjoyed the simple things in like such as hosting family and friends for pig-pickins’, oyster roasts and fish fry’s. He was an avid NASCAR fan. He loved fishing so much that he acted as if it were his first time whenever he left the dock. Gary was a man of few words, but if you ever mentioned fishing, he would talk on and on. A man that was content with his life, no matter how much or how little he owned. Strong-willed and tough, he fought to the very end.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on February 12, 2022, at Whispering Pines Baptist Church, 6547 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington NC 28412. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
