CAROLINA BEACH — Sharon Lynette Luquire of Carolina Beach NC died December 18, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born February 21, 1948 in Concord, NC to the late Richard Scott Church and Marcel Hatley Church.
She graduated from Concord High School in 1966 and received her Registered Nursing Diploma from Cabarrus College School of Nursing and Health in 1969. She met and married the love of her life, Donald Lee Luquire, with whom she was married for 50 years until his death on Christmas Eve 2019. They had two sons, Shane and Justin, who were her pride and joy. Nothing meant more to Sharon than her love for family, and she instilled these values in each of them. Her second passion was taking care of people. She had an illustrious career in healthcare, starting out as an ICU nurse and ultimately spending her career in geriatrics and the skilled nursing home business. Sharon was a servant leader and impacted the lives of countless patients, families, and employees at Hillhaven, Inc., Britthaven, Inc., and Sava Senior Care. In her roles as an administrator and eventually as Regional Vice President, she mentored her employees to give their best every day and to always put their patients first. She is survived by her sister (and best friend) Pat Chappell (husband David), her brother Richard Church, Jr., and sons Shane Luquire (wife Shannon Luquire) and Justin Luquire (wife Kirsten Luquire). She was also the proud grandmother to three grandchildren, Ava, Oliver, and Bexton.
After retirement, Sharon had a chance to travel the world, visiting a dozen countries, including her favorite island, Santorini Greece. She also continued her love of helping the elderly by volunteering her time at Coastal Cove of Wilmington. Sharon loved sports, particularly Carolina Tarheel basketball, Troutman’s Barbecue, and everything associated with living at the beach. Above all else, she loved her family. Her happiness came from their happiness. She lived her life to the fullest and displayed a smile and positive attitude despite the obstacles she faced over the last few years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8th at 11:00am at Harbor Oaks Condominium, 1080 St. Joseph Street, Carolina Beach, NC 28428.
