Annemarie “Annie” Cunningham, 89

WILMINGTON — Annie Cunningham 89, Born July 15th, 1932, passed away peacefully at her home on November 28th. 2021.

Annie was Valedictorian Class of ’49 at Bishop McDonnell High School in Brooklyn, New York. Always a standout, she was known for voicing her opinions and had a knack for telling it like it is. She always told the truth, even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear.

A proud Irish lass, her Soda bread was deemed the very best, and always served with a cuppa tea! She believed in overcooking everything and freezing everything else! Her extensive vocabulary – she was an editor after all – never included curse words; she was always a lady. She did not excel at suffering fools, hiding her disdain, or putting the car in reverse. She treasured her family and friends; you always knew where you stood with her. She either liked you or she didn’t. As her children, we are still trying to figure out which one it was for us (we know she loved us). Master Gardener, dog rescuer, role model and let’s be honest, a terrible singer, we wouldn’t have her any other way.

A warmhearted spirit whose passion was caring for others, she inspired many women, helping them feel safe, empowered, and loved. Everything she did, she did for her daughters.

Survived by her daughters, Patti Jacaruso and Annemarie Williamson, son-in-law Michael Jacaruso and sons from another mother, Chris, Patrick, Michael, and Joey Cunningham. Nieces and nephews: Suzanne, Nancy, Timmy, Vincent, Billy, and Tommy. Grandchildren: Tanya, Casey (Josh), Savannah (Connor), Tatum. Hannah, Thomas, Harrison, Sabrina, Danica, Spencer, Austin, Jacob, Alec, and Grace.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph “Pop” Cunningham, her son Mark Whiffen, brother Vincent Hand and niece Kathleen Boyd. All who love her dearly will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent) and undying love for us.’

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am  – 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. A funeral mass will follow at St. Mark Catholic Church at 1:30 pm.
