Elizabeth “Betty” Tutor Hill, 95

WILMINGTON — Elizabeth “Betty” Tutor Hill entered her heavenly home on Thursday, November 18th with her granddaughter, Elizabeth, holding her hand. She was born on April 30, 1926 and was the youngest daughter of Sephus Edgar Tutor and Willie Lee Tutor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert A. Hill and by her 12 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her children Teresa Shaver Lee (Murrie), William Garrett Shaver Jr. (Jill), Robin Hill Novak, Roger Hill (Mary Beth), and Alan Hill. Her grandchildren Elizabeth, Garrett (Brandy), Mandy (Jon), Phillip and Margaux. Her great-grandchildren, Abigail, Lillian, Connor and Peyton. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Betty joined Southern Bell right out of high school as a telephone operator and was promoted to the chief operator. In 1962 she was transferred, with her children, to Wilmington with Southern Bell. Betty was a Methodist most of her life and grew up in a little country church (Roberdell United Methodist Church in Rockingham, NC) where her mother played the piano. She was known for her strong faith and her witness to others. Her entire life was centered around helping others. One of her greatest joys was her involvement in Bible Study Fellowship led by Anne Graham Lotz. After retiring to Oak Island, she was asked to help start Bible Study Fellowship in the Wilmington area where she was involved for many years. While living on Oak Island, she became a member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church where she was very active and served as an Elder. She also served as a Hospice volunteer for almost 20 years in Oak Island, and it was one of her greatest and most rewarding volunteer jobs. After moving back to Wilmington, she rejoined Trinity United Methodist Church where she and Bob had been married. She was active in many Lay Witness Missions and in the Coastal Carolina Emmaus Community. For the last 7 months, Betty attended the Thursday Night Worship Service at Pine Valley United Methodist Church. This was the highlight of her week and she thoroughly enjoyed the gospel music, message, and fellowship.

Burial will be held on Saturday, November 27th at 11:00 am at Oleander Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Brock Meyer and Rev. Skip Williams.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm at Pine Valley United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Tim Reaves, Rev. Kim Collins, Rev. Barry Stallings, and Rev. Chris Eason.
