Shirley was born in Wilmington, NC on November 3, 1935. She graduated from Penderlea High School (where she was an exceptional student and athlete) in 1954, and James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1957, (where she was chosen Miss James Walker). She was a very active member of Temple Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees over the years, volunteered in the church office, sang in the choir for decades, and was proud to be the first female elected to the Board of Deacons, which she chaired on two separate occasions. She was a Registered Nurse at James Walker Memorial Hospital, and worked for Dr. Sigmond Bear until she became a mother, at which time she became a “stay at home” mom for her children and their neighborhood friends, until they were grown. She then took a refresher course and returned to the profession that she loved at Davis Health Care Center.
Known for her compassion for others, her love of music and singing, her positive attitude and her beautiful smile, she was a true example of Christian love, and was an amazing and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by many!
Out of an abundance of caution, there was a private family burial at Oleander Memorial Gardens,
