HAMPSTEAD — Harold “Hal” Joseph Pitts, 66, of Hampstead, North Carolina, died Wednesday, September 29, 2021.
He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on November 20, 1954 to Jeannette I. (St. Hilaire) Pitts and Harold C. Pitts.
Hal grew up in Pelham, NH where he met his wife Karen Ann (McLain) Pitts. He began his career in the United States Navy on the nuclear submarine USS Whale. Following his service in the Navy, he worked at the nuclear reactor located at The University of Lowell where he attended classes and earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology. After earning his degree, he went on to work at numerous nuclear facilities across the country. Hal moved his family to Wilmington, NC in 1992 and eventually settled in Hampstead, NC. Over the years, he co-founded several businesses with close friends he met in the nuclear industry. He retired in 2018 to spend more time with family and friends.
Hal enjoyed boating and time on the water with family and friends. He was a member and former Commodore of Harbor Village Yacht Club. He volunteered his time with Meals on Wheels and 4C’s Food Pantry. Above all, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeannette (St. Hilaire) Pitts and Harold Pitts; mother-in-law and father-in-law Viola (Mondazzi) McLain and Philip McLain; sister-in-law Joan Sturtevant; sister-in-law Donna Pitts and nephew Scott McLain.
He is survived by his loving wife Karen Pitts; son Ronald Pitts and wife Jennifer (Perry) Pitts; son Jeffrey Pitts and wife Lauren (King) Pitts; daughter Jennifer Pitts and fiancée Daniel Richards; grandchildren Mallory Pitts, Caroline and Anderson Pitts, Mason and Ethan Richards; sister Janice Blankenstein; brother Wayne Pitts; sister Kimberly McGrath and husband Bert McGrath; brother-in-law Philip McLain Jr. and wife Janet McLain as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors between 1pm-3pm, Monday, October 4, 2021, at Andrews Hampstead Chapel at 17730 Highway 17 North, Hampstead, NC. A graveside service will follow at Sea Lawn Memorial Park. A celebration of life will be held at Harbor Village Yacht Club in Hampstead, NC immediately following the service.
