WILMINGTON — Colonel John C. Gonzalez, 92, passed away at home on Friday September 3, 2021 into the arms of his lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
John was born in Manhattan, New York on August 22, 1929 to Antonio Gonzalez and Carmela (Lombardi) Gonzalez. He spent 17 year growing up in NYC until October 1949 when he entered into the U.S Marine Corps. Shortly after joining the U.S Marine corps. In July 1951 he joined the U.S Naval Academy. He graduated from the U.S Naval Academy in 1955, 55th of 742 out of his graduating class. John was a Vietnam Veteran. He was awarded many medals and ribbons including the Purple Heart while in the Marines. He served in many units of the service: 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment and 3rd Marine Division. He proudly served our country for 32 years from 1949 to 1981. After retiring from the USMC he went on to teach Advanced Electronics at Cape Fear Community College. He enjoyed spending time with his family and is a member of Myrtle Grove Presbyterian church.
John was survived by his wife Sylvia N. Gonzalez, his children Richard Gonzalez, Diana Gonzalez Freed, Capt. Ron Gonzalez, Robert J. Gonzalez, Teresa Calhoun, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Patricia L. Myer, Elaine Gonzalez and Son Howard Gonzalez.
A funeral service will be held at 11am, Monday, September 20, 2021, at Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church, 800 Piner Rd., Wilmington, NC 28409. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive visitors from 3-5pm, Sunday, at Andrews Valley Chapel, 4108 S.
