WILMINGTON — James Robert “JR” Edwards, 92, of Wilmington, passed away Monday, August 16, 2021, at Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center.
He was born October 10, 1928 in Selma, NC, a son of the late James William Edwards and Pennie McRae Edwards. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lea Massengill Edwards, four sisters, Shirley Workman, Betty Lou Crocker, Hazel Langston, Hilda Skinner, and a brother, Frank “Nub” Edwards.
JR proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist during World War II.
JR was a follower of Jesus and a longstanding member of Sunset Park Baptist Church.
He is survived by four sons, Robert “Bobby” Eugene Edwards (Purnell), Keith Glenn Edwards (Shirley), James “Jimmy” Robert Edwards, Jr. (Terry) and Samuel “Sammy” Jay Edwards (Sharon), all of Wilmington, NC; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Allen (Bill), Meg Brewer (Chad), Abby Laver (Sean-deceased), Emily Edwards, Billy Edwards (Nicole), Keith Edwards (Heather) and T.J. Edwards; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
A brief committal service will be held at 11am Saturday, August 21, 2021, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, followed by a 12pm visitation and 1pm funeral service at Andrews Market Street Chapel with Rev. Rocky Myrick and Rev. Chad Brewer officiating.
