WILMINGTON — Allene Long Suggs, 84, of Wilmington, NC went to be with the Lord Friday, August 13, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Allene was born in Columbus County, NC on November 25, 1936. She was the wife of the late Burnie Suggs, and daughter of the late Dewey and Rosa Long. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Marie Clewis.
Surviving are her two daughters; Diane Morton, and husband Brent, of Wilmington; Pam Ross, and husband Tim, of Charlotte; one son Bentley Suggs of Wilmington; and sister Ann Ezzell, and husband Freddie. In addition, she is survived by five grandchildren; Jonathan Morton, and wife Meredith; Matthew Morton, and wife Erika; Sarah Martin, and husband Jerry; Timothy Ross, and fiancé Tori; and Allyson Placke, and husband Steven. She is also survived by three great grandchildren: Titus Martin, Airlie and Wright Morton; two great grandchildren ‘arriving soon’, and family cat, Bianca.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, and NANA. Her children and grandchildren were very special to her and she supported them all by being an active part in their lives by attending school and church activities, ball games, music recitals, dance and baton recitals, parades, all award and achievement recognitions for her children and grandchildren, and Scouting events. It was an absolute honor to be called her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren!
Allene was a charter member of Freedom Baptist Church and will be remembered by her warm, beautiful smile and strong Christian faith. She loved her church dearly and served many years as a Sunday School, ‘Sunbeam’, and ‘Mission Friends’ teacher, and a treasurer. She was also a member of the ‘Ladies Prayer Group’, with special friends Pam Brown, Lois Lemmond, Jackie Miller, and Bobbi Mullins. She sent numerous cards throughout the years to her family, church members, and friends in need of encouragement and prayer.
She retired after 42 years of business administrative support at Airgas, Olsten, and National Linen Service. She also volunteered at the New Hanover County Public Library (Pine Valley), and previously with the American Red Cross.
The family will receive friends Sunday, August 22, from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm at Freedom Baptist Church, 802 North College Road, Wilmington, NC. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 pm in the church, officiated by Rev. Dodd Mays. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Brent Morton, Tim Ross, Jonathan Morton, Matthew Morton, Timothy Ross, and Steven Placke.
