John Roy Gmytruk, 70, spent much of his life searching for artifacts and relics

CASTLE HAYNE — John Roy Gmytruk, 70, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at his home. John was born Nov. 9, 1950, to the late Andrew and Mildred Gmytruk.

He was a 1969 graduate of New Hanover High School. Shortly upon graduation, he began a career with General Electric, where he was employed for 35 years before retiring in 2007.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and James Whitfield; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Gmytruk; stepson, Jerry Wolf Jr.; stepdaughter, Julie Ann Curry; and beloved German shepherd, Lori Lou.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Judy Ann Gmytruk; sister, Cecilia Horrell; brother, Larry Gmytruk; two sons, Jeremy Gmytruk and Anthony Gmytruk; stepdaughter, Jody Ann Wolf (Kurt); five grandchildren, Jaime Jackson (Shane), Jeremy Curry (Kara), Jessica Wolf, Kaitlyn Davis (Phillip) and Candice Gmytruk (Jamie); five great-grandchildren, Ainsley and Maverick Jackson, Jacob Gmytruk and Grayson and Eliza Curry; many nieces and nephews; as well as his lap buddy, Kirby.

John was an avid fisherman, winning many King Mackerel tournaments in his younger years. He spent much of his life digging for world and Civil War artifacts and relics, traveling as far as France. He enjoyed sharing his findings and teaching his grand and great-grandchildren their significance to history.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 10, at the Gmytruk residence, 3625 Lynn Ave., Castle Hayne, with David Carver officiating.
