WILMINGTON — Elaine Miele Matthews, formerly of Wethersfield and Torrington, Conn., died peacefully Monday, June 21, 2021, at her home in Wilmington. Elaine was a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital for almost 30 years before she moved to North Carolina and continued her work as an RN at Duke Raleigh Hospital. As a nurse, her work ethic was second to none, and she was beloved by her peers and patients alike.
More importantly, Elaine was a loving and single mom to her four sons who loved their mother deeply. She was immensely proud of them and treasured their time together. They are grateful for all the times they shared and the strong sense of family that she fostered. In addition to her sons, her greatest joy and light of her life was her four grandchildren. The title “Grammy” was one she cherished more than any other. She also loved her two grand-dogs and the beach time she spent with them.
Elaine is survived by her four children, Michael Matthews Jr., and his wife, Jaqueline Barkey, of Raleigh, Daniel Matthews, and his wife, Kimberly Matthews, of Windsor, Connecticut, along with their two children, Gabriella and Andrew Matthews, Brendan Matthews, and his wife, Jennifer Matthews, of Fuquay Varina, along with their two children, Sydney and Colin Matthews, and Ryan Matthews of Southern Pines. In addition to her kids and grandkids, Elaine is survived by her seven siblings, Joanne, and her husband, Tim Callahan, of Portland, Connecticut, Anthony, and his wife, Charlene Miele, of Newington, Connecticut, Susan, and her husband, Ron Waid, of Wilmington, Jacqueline, and her husband, John Tarascio, of Chapel Hill, Stephen, and his wife, Patricia Miele, of Berlin, Connecticut, David, and his wife, Shannon Miele, of Glastonbury, Connecticut, and Sharon, and her husband, Carl Glowacki, of Clearwater, Florida.
