Charles Cahill, 88, former vice chancellor and provost at UNCW

WILMINGTON — Charles Cahill, 88, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021, following injuries sustained in a car accident. His family was as his bedside.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorotha Ann Cleek Cahill; son, Steven Cahill, and daughter-in-law, Freyja Cahill; two daughters, Terri Cahill and Susan Cahill; and youngest son, Chance Cahill, all of Wilmington. He is also survived by his two grandsons who he adored, Patrick Cahill, and his wife, Brittney, and Travis Cahill, and his fiancé, Meredith. Charles will also be missed by many in-laws, nieces and nephews who knew and loved him as “Uncle Pat.”

Charles was born Feb. 23, 1933, in El Reno, Oklahoma. He received a basketball scholarship to Oklahoma Baptist University, where he pursed a major in chemistry. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in chemistry at Oklahoma University. He married Dortha in 1953 and began his career as Dean of Chemistry at Oklahoma City University. In 1971, Charles moved his family to Wilmington to become the vice chancellor and provost at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. He was an integral part of building the athletic and academic programs. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. He loved animals and leaves behind his best friend “Roxie” who was always by his side.

He touched many lives in his very unique and special way and will be missed dearly.
