Marlene Mildred Stewart, 78, delighted in meeting new people

Marlene Mildred Stewart

CARONLINA SHORES — Marlene Mildred Stewart passed away Monday, May 31, 2021.

She was born March 1, 1943, to Eli and Barbara Kosanovich in Trafford, Pennsylvania, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and went on to obtain a B.A. Degree in Elementary Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then an M.A. from West Virginia University.

Marlene taught school for 35 years in Charleston, West Virginia. There, she met the love of her life, Gary Stewart, in 1981, and they were married in 1983. They enjoyed a wonderful life together in Charleston, including building a house together from scratch.

Gary and Marlene moved to Carolina Shores in 1998, and Marlene immediately became a leader in the recreational activities in the community. Marlene never met a stranger, and when she saw a good idea, she made it happen. She was instrumental in creating the New Friends Group, the New Neighbor Welcome Committee, the Progressive Dinners and the annual community Thanksgiving Dinner.

Marlene and Gary loved to dance, and that led to serving on the board of the Carolina Coastal Cotillion.
Most of all, Marlene is described by many people in Carolina Shores as “the first friend I made in
Carolina Shores” because of her delight in getting to know new people and her knack for making
newcomers feel at home.

In addition to her husband Gary, Marlene is survived by her sister, Jean Kosanovich of Carolina Shores.

There will be a celebration of life held for Marlene later in June.
