James Albert Daughtrey, 72, ‘frequent flyer’ of Paul’s Place in Rocky Point

CASTLE HAYNE — James Albert Daughtrey, 72, went quietly to be with his Lord Tuesday, May 4, 2021, from New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

James was born in Burgaw to the late Odell and Margaret Lewis Daughtrey. James was also preceded in death by his son, Michael; brothers, Durwood, Everett Earl and Ernie; and sisters, Joyce D. Miller and Janice Elaine Daughtrey.

James is survived by his loving wife of more than 32 years, Rowena “Nena” Gurganious Daughtrey; children, Katrina D. Russ (Rick), Chris Daughtrey and Betty Jean Church; sisters, Barbara D. Smith and Frankie Mae Saunders (Louis); daughter-in-law, Phyllis; brother-in-law, Barry (Shirlyn); sister-in-law, Kay; and many nephews, nieces and extended family.

James has had a long and varied career as a long-haul truck driver, owner and manager of Daughtrey’s Home Improvement, a quality control manager at Sunny Point and a hobbyist of small engine repairs.

James had a love of fresh water fishing and was a “frequent flyer” of Paul’s Place in Rocky Point and the local Hardees and McDonalds. James never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to everyone he met or saw. James will be greatly missed.

James’ family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday, May 7, at Andrews Mortuary-Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road, Wilmington. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Internment will be held in Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington.

Flowers are welcome or you may make a donation in his honor to the Willie Stargell Foundation (a local kidney foundation), 1213 Culbreth Drive, Wilmington, NC 28405.
