Herbert K. ‘Keith’ Shera Jr., 54, member of Cape Fear Transporter Society VW Club

CAROLINA BEACH — Herbert K. “Keith” Shera Jr., 54, passed away April 9, 2021. He was born Oct. 31, 1966, on his father’s birthday. He was a lasting gift to his family for his too-few years on this earth.

He recovered from childhood kidney disease and went on to an active life playing football, surfing and skateboarding, among other things. He was not only athletic, but a musician as well, having studied music at the Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, including viola and guitar. He was a skilled mechanic and antique car and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a member of the Cape Fear Transporter Society VW Club.

Keith was a friend to all and beloved by his neighbors in the community, where he lived and in the surfing community and where he felt at home. He cared faithfully for his mother after his father passed away in 2016, ensuring she wanted for nothing. He was a wonderful son. He freely helped anyone who asked, particularly if they needed help with car repair, re-tooling or restoration. His kind heart ranged far; he rescued his faithful dog Petey from the side of the road some 12 years ago, and they were inseparable.

Keith is survived by his beloved mother, Nancy Shera; sister and brother-in-law, Sheralee and Mark Hurwitz; niece, Rachel; and nephews, Jacob and Matthew; and dog, Petey. May his memory forever be a blessing.

Private arrangements have been observed by the family. A memorial service will be scheduled in the coming weeks and information about that event will be posted on Andrews Mortuary & Crematory’s website.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Keith’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; the animal shelters, SOAR or PAWS; or food bank of your choice.
