WILMINGTON — Dorothy “Dottie” Harrelson Matthews, 91, died Friday, April 9, 2021, in hospice after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
She was born Oct. 14, 1929, in Marion, South Carolina, the daughter of the late James Richelieu and Irene Robertson Harrelson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Robert Edward Matthews; and brother, Richelieu Harrelson.
During her marriage to Robert, they lived in various locations; North Carolina, Florida, New Jersey and California. She enjoyed volunteer work in community services and most recently at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children, Donald (Diane), Charles (Diana), Karen MacDonald (Charles) and James (Cheryl); four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Eric (Catherine), and their three children, Emma, Wesley and Colin, Allison Matthews Murray (Shane), and their two children, William and Caroline, Samantha Matthews Martinez (Anthony) and Sarah MacDonald; and Dorothy’s sister, Mary L. Harrelson Steuer.
On April 13, 2021, her family will celebrate her life in a private graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery, Marion, South Carolina, where she will be buried next to her husband and parents.
