WILMINGTON — Nicholas Anthony “Nick” Caputo, 79, died peacefully Friday, March 19, 2021. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Caputo, the youngest of seven siblings, Rose Sanzone, Ann Fucci, Lena Barone, Eleanor Selvaggio, Faye Cassano and Caroline Mistretta.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Diana Rose Caputo.
He is survived by his devoted children, Denise Leuci, and her husband, Anthony, Christine Caputo and Joseph Caputo, and his wife, Nicole; sisters, Faye and Caroline; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was a proud grandfather of Kathryn Leuci and Louis Leuci with Nicole Bitette. He leaves behind a very special companion, Regina Grimes.
Nick served in the New York City Police Department for 20 years at the 71st Precinct in Brooklyn and Police Headquarters. Upon retirement, he worked for Kidder, Peabody, ABC News and The View with Barbara Walters.
Upon his second retirement in 2003, Nick relocated to Wilmington. He enjoyed the 10-13 Club, playing pinochle at the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center, bowling at Cardinal Lanes, outings with St. Mark SIM and was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. He was well-known for his quick wit and extensive collection of jokes.
Nick will be remembered with love as a wonderful father and grandfather who always put family first, and his passing on the Feast of St. Joseph is a beautiful testament to the life he lived and provided for his family.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 25, at St. Mark Catholic Church. Masks and social distancing protocols are in effect. Livestreaming is available at Boxcast.
