Martha ‘Margaret’ Morgan, 84, adventurous hiker drawn to the Tennessee mountains

OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Martha “Margaret” Morgan, 84, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Autumn Care of Shallotte.

She was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Cordele, Georgia, the daughter of the late Malva Fletcher Bowen and Odessa F. Gilbert Bowen.

Mrs. Morgan was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, volunteering when she was 21 years old. She was very adventurous, loved the mountains in Tennessee, attended Southeastern Community College and graduated as a cosmetologist. She was a very trusting person and fiercely independent. She loved dancing and hiking. She grew up in Florida and was named “Most Talented” in high school. She was the mother of two daughters.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Francis Morgan; grandson, Matthew Stephens; and sister, Virginia Aman.

Surviving are two daughters, Melody Mills Stephens, and her husband, Terry, of Ocean Isle Beach and Suzanne Mills Leggett, and her husband, Chuck, of Fuquay Varina; sister, Henrilea Harrison of Greely, Colorado; granddaughter, Maggie Stephens McKenzie, and her husband, Shane; and great-grandchild, Avery Claire McKenzie.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte Chapel, in memory of their mother.

The family would like to express their love and gratitude to all the staff at Autumn Care of Shallotte for all the love and care that was given to their mother.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association or Brunswick Senior Resources Inc., Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 2470, Shallotte, NC 28459.
