SHALLOTTE — Gracie Mae Hewett Evans, 78, died Monday, March 8, 2021, at her home. Gracie was born Jan. 21, 1943, in Brunswick County, daughter of the late Henry W. and Lattie Register Hewett.

She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She and her husband owned and operated G&G Dredging for many years.

Gracie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. She loved flowers and sitting by her koi fish pond and rocking on the front porch. She always enjoyed going on family trips, was an avid reader of the Brunswick Beacon and looked forward to the joke that was published weekly in the News & Shopper.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jordan Evans; great-grandchild, Avery; two brothers, Woodrow Hewett and Odell Hewett; and son-in-law, Mike Gause.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Garland Evans of the home; son, Gene Evans Jr., and his wife, Jamie, of Shallotte; two daughters, Gina Gore, and her husband, Mark, and Greta Gause, all of Shallotte; sister, Christine Hewett, and her husband, Richard, of Shallotte; and 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 11, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Kelly, Oliver Ramirez, Josh Child, Nicky Clemmons, Mark Evans and Eric Evans. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
