John Robert Babb Jr., 73, dedicated husband, loving father and patriot

John Robert Babb Jr.

WILMINGTON — John Robert Babb, Jr., 73, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, surrounded by the love of family.

John lived his earthly life as though he did not do anything extraordinary. Yet, he did wonderful things for the people he came into contact with.

His childhood was highlighted with many fine events with his parents, Katie (Campfield) and John Robert “Rob” Babb. He maintained a strong sense of pride in attending school at Tileston and New Hanover High. Like many of you, he enjoyed many good times and was continually blessed by God with grace and good fortune. He loved his Lord and his church family. Yet, he also suffered a few difficult losses, such as the loss of his oldest son.

John retired from the U.S. Navy as a decorated hospital corpsman, HMCS (FMF). He served his country at various military bases in the United States, numerous afloat units and Vietnam. But his most cherished service was with his beloved U.S. Marine Corps. John served in several veterans’ organizations, including Commandant of the Cape Fear Detachment 1070 Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 10 and Post 545 and the Fleet Reserve Association.

He served in his civilian career with the U.S. Customs Service in Wilmington and served as district director of North Carolina and director, Field Operations, in Houston, Texas. After the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, John served with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and retired in 2004 at the deputy director, Field Operations. He also served as a former trustee, Cape Fear Community College. John spent the last 47 years enjoying time with Yvonne, his wonderful wife, family members and his many friends.

John’s service and leadership, throughout his distinguished military and civilian careers, was motivated by duty, honor and sacrifice. His love of God and country galvanized his march through his earthly life with kindness, trustworthiness and his high principles. He was a dedicated husband, loving father and patriot.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Yvonne of 47 years; daughter, Pamela Yvonne Babb of Wilmington; son, Brian Keith Babb of Charlotte; granddaughters, Caitlin Babb and Emily Babb; and grandson, Jonathan Babb of Charlotte. John will be dearly missed by his family, friends and former colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Kevin Babb; and parents, John Robert (Rob) Babb Sr. and Katie Campfield Babb Smith of Wilmington.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be a private celebration of life at a later date.

If you would like to make a donation in his honor, please consider Fellowship Baptist Church, 5709 Murrayville Road, Wilmington, NC 28405; or the Marine Corps League, Wilmington; or any charity of one’s choice.
