WILMINGTON — David James Herring Jr., 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021. He was born in Rose Hill to David James Herring Sr. and Juanita Wells Herring.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bridget Herring and Cynthia Annette Herring; and brother-in-law, Eric Lee.
David is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharon Schweitzer Herring; son, Alex Herring; daughter, Leslie Lowery (Brandon); grandchildren, Dean Lowery and Clara Lowery; sisters, Sherria Crawley (Lawrence), Joyce Lynn Atkinson, Gail Lee and Sally Spainhour (Randy); and many nieces and nephews.
David graduated from Burgaw High School in 1965. He attended Wilmington College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and serving in the Vietnam conflict. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after many years as a beloved letter carrier out of Wilmington’s Azalea Station.
David was a faithful member of Pine Valley United Methodist Church and the Agape Sunday School Class. He was always quick with a joke and loved making people smile. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family will hold a private service at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 25, at Pine Valley United Methodist Church, Wilmington, with the Rev. Doctor Tim Reaves officiating. Services will be viewable via livestreaming at pvumc.net.
