WILMINGTON — Landon Johnathan ‘Johnny’ Kinney, 40, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a medical illness.

Landon was born Feb. 14, 1980, in Jacksonville. He was the son of Norman Kinney and Christyne Kinney Hines, resided in Burgaw and had graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington.

Landon was a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, having served two tours with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of Closer Walk United Methodist Church.

In addition to his mother, Landon is survived by his daughter, Lauren Leigh Kinney; son, Landon Griffin Kinney; mother of his children, Lisa Kinney; three sisters: Consuela Seals (Neal Jr.), Kanesha Grant (Jeff) and Sonya Kinney; uncles, Lee Hines (Dexter); aunt, Caroline Hines; two nieces, Priscilla Ruby Seals and Emma Parker Kinney; three nephews, Tyler Jordan Grant, Luke Riley Grant and Norman Kinney Daughtry; as well as his companion, Jennifer Mintz.

He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Kinney; two uncles, Thurston Hines and Landon Hines; and two grandmothers, Lula Bonnie Hines and Charlotte Kinney.

The family will receive family and friends for a meet and greet from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 7, with a celebration of life service with military honors beginning at 6 p.m. at Wilmington Funeral Chapel. An inurnment will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 8, in Florence Cemetery, South Carolina, with military honors.
