CASTLE HAYNE — Joseph Leroy “Joe” Rhine, 83, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Wilmington. He was born March 27, 1937, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to the late Benjiman Franklin and Margaret Sarah (Hoffman) Rhine.

Joe retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1975 after over 20 years of service to his country. He then worked at and retired from the Wilmington International Airport as a public safety officer after 20 years of service.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Patricia Rhine Atkinson, and her husband, Corey; grandson, Terry Ramsey, and his wife, Judy; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Joe was also preceded in death by his wife, Latitia Savage Rhine in 2009; brothers, Arthur Thomas, David Elwood, James Earl, Benjamin Paul, Raymond Dean and George Robert; and sisters, Mary Bertha, Grace Edith, Betty Jane, Ellen Eilsabeth and Margorie Louise.

A memorial service in his honor will be held at a later date.
