Stephen Augustus ‘Steve’ Zandy, 67, put his heart and soul into animal rescue

Stephen Augustus ‘Steve’ Zandy

BURGAW — Stephen Augustus “Steve” Zandy, 67, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Wilmington.

Steve was born Jan. 18, 1953, in Burgaw to Lottie Ramsey Zandy and August Lewis Zandy. He graduated from Burgaw High School in 1972 and UNC Chapel Hill in 1978.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Zandy.

Steve is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Julia Zandy of Burgaw; sister, Jean Zandy Fidler of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Marilyn Zandy of Hickory; nephew, four nieces, several great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friend of 20-plus years, Stuart Goldman of Castleberry, Florida.

Steve had many lifelong passions, including volunteering his time toward animal rescue and his incomparable devotion for the UNC Tar Heels. He tirelessly worked with his great friend Pat Lambert rescuing animals, keeping records of rescued animals and spent many weekends at adoption events. He never met a dog or cat he did not love!

Fostering many dogs and cats over the years brought so much joy to Steve. Additionally, he was especially proud of his UNC education and his love of the Tar Heels. His home was filled with Tar Heel memorabilia; from Tar Heel clothing to a Tar Heel Christmas Tree! Steve also had a special passion for gardening, one he learned from his brother Tommy. He loved to share his harvest with friends and family, and you could always look to Steve to share a great recipe!

Seen by many as sweet and caring, with a cheerful attitude and a contagious smile, Steve brought joy and happiness to his friends and family and will be forever missed.
