Lonnie William ‘Bill’ Benton, 60, captivating storyteller who treasured his friends and family

WILMINGTON — Lonnie William “Bill” Benton, 60, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, surrounded by family at Hospice House in Brunswick County. Bill was born May 1, 1960, in Fayetteville and was raised in Wilmington.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Benton; brother, Jerome Max Benton; and sister-in-law, Kimberley Benton.

Bill is survived by his mother, Nancy Holland; wife, Dianne Benton; sons, Steven Benton, Clayton Cannady and Britton Benton, in addition to stepsons, Jerry and Jason Fernside; sister, Sharon Patrick (Greg); brother, Alan Benton; many nieces and nephews, including Jerome Max Benton (Morgan) and Ashley Benton; and great-niece, Heidi Benton.

The passion and joy Bill had in life will live on through the countless stories and life lessons he always shared with his family and friends. He loved spending time on the golf course, jamming to southern rock music, fishing in the sun and watching NASCAR, all while surrounded by the people he cared about. You could always find him supporting his favorite teams, the Washington Redskins and the Carolina Tar Heels. He will be tremendously missed by all, but his spirit will forever live on.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
