WILMINGTON — Gary James Simpson, 71, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born Dec. 4, 1948, in Sikeston, Missouri, to the late Walter James Charles Simpson and Mildred Lynn Simpson.

Gary moved to Wilmington when he was eight years old. He lived in the Scotts Hill Community for many years and was of Baptist faith. Gary was married 48 years to his beloved wife, Mary, who he always called his “Child Bride.” He was an instructor at Cape Fear Community College in drafting design, mechanical engineering and electricity. Gary enjoyed collecting cameras and insulators. He loved fishing, especially at Ocracoke. Most of all, Gary loved his family.

Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra S. Simon.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mary “Libby” Simpson; daughter, Jennifer L. Simpson; son, Brad Simpson, and his wife, Kelly; sister, Joyce S. Carter; grandchildren, Benjamin and Lila Simpson; and several nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID-19 measures, no services are planned at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable contributions in honor of Gary may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare; Eastern North Carolina Alzheimer’s Association; or charity of one’s choice.
