Howard N. Phelps, 83, square dance caller for more than 50 years

CASTLE HAYNE — Howard N. Phelps, 83, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.

He was born Aug. 21, 1937, son to the late Lee Weston Phelps and Annie Mae Simpson Phelps. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, W.C. and David Phelps; and his second wife, Louise Phelps.

He held a contractor license in heating and air conditioning. He was a square dancing caller for over 50 years and traveled to many places calling square dancing. He served in the U.S. Army and a proud father, grandfather and great-granddad.

Howard is survived by his son, Howard F. Phelps (Susan) of Sarasota, Florida; daughter, Wanda Phelps McLamb of Castle Hayne; three grandchildren, Heather Carr (Steven) of Greensboro, Tabitha Bolenbaugh (Jay) of North Port, Florida, and Cameron McLamb of Castle Hayne; two brothers, Jimmy Phelps of Charleston, South Carolina, and Tommy Phelps of Florida; several great-grandchildren; and first wife, Kay Phelps.

A graveside service will be held next month in Oakdale Cemetery.
