Jerri Ellen Wheeler, 71, obtained her dream of becoming a teacher

ST. JAMES — Jerri Ellen Wheeler, 71, passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020.

Jerri was born May 11, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Tom and Ruth Hogsett. She grew up in Hillsboro, Ohio, and graduated from Hillsboro High School. She was reluctantly voted the FFA Queen in her senior year.

Jerri moved to California in the 1970s, where she worked for many years at Disneyland. Later, she transferred to the Disney Channel. From there, she went to work for Cal. Tech in Pasadena, California, where she held various administrative positions. Jerri always had a passion to be a teacher. She went back to school and earned her teaching credentials in her 50s. She taught kindergarten for three years until meeting her eventual husband Jim. From 2007 to 2016, Jerri and Jim lived in San Juan Capistrano, California, before retiring to St. James in 2016.

Jerri was active in many book clubs, lunch groups, The St. James Service Club and will be remembered for her wonderful cookies and cakes, being known to some as the “Cookie Lady.” Jerri and Jim attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Southport.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Hogsett; sister, Joan Terrell; and dog, Hobo.

Survivors include her husband, James “Jim” Wheeler; sister, Pat Hogsett-Tieman; brother, John Hogsett; and niece, Ruth Ryan.

A celebration of Jerri’s life will be held at a later date. A graveside service and additional celebration of her life will be also held in Hillsboro, Ohio, at a later date.
