WILMINGTON — James Frederick “Jim” Batty, 73, passed away Monday, April 13, 2020.
Jim was born on Jan. 1, 1947, in Albany, New York, to Marjorie (White) Batty and the late C. Jack Batty. He grew up in Gloversville, New York, and enjoyed his younger years fishing, hunting, hiking and camping in the Adirondacks with friends and family.
Jim graduated from Gloversville High School in 1964 and Siena College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He spent his career in textiles, serving as president of Hawkins Fabrics until retiring to Wilmington in 2015.
An avid golfer, Jim was known to all for his good humor, kind heart, gentle spirit and incredible drive that few could beat. He held leadership positions at Pine Brook Golf Club in Gloversville and was a MGA Cup Champion at Cape Fear National in North Carolina. Jim always finished his rounds with a cigar and friends.
A father of five, he raised his children with the understanding that education combined with hard work could take them anywhere they wanted. He inspired an appreciation for nature, travel, good food and fine wine. He was always on the ready with a perfectly-timed quip, and he was the partner everyone wanted in a game of pitch.
Some of Jim Batty’s favorite memories were annual fishing trips with his son in the Thousand Islands, completing the Northville-Lake Placid Trail with his family and enjoying travel adventures throughout his life with his wife.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, C. Jack Batty. He is survived by his mother, Marjorie (White) Batty; wife, Lucianne Nicholas Batty, and their children, Laurel Andros, Shauna (Mark) Hamilton, Bryan (Sara) Batty, Jae (Steve) Ireland and Alix Batty; and grandchildren, Ben Andros, Carter and Olivia Hamilton, Ian Batty, and Oriana, Amalia, Brody and Rosalie Ireland. Jim is survived also by his siblings, Linda (Dennis) McKevitt, Valerie (Paul) Levine, Robin Ford and Brad (Jennifer) Batty; as well as several nieces and nephews.
