Jane Sneeden Hines, 87, beloved matriarch who kept everyone in line

WILMINGTON — Jane Sneeden Hines, 87, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at her home surrounded by family and friends and her loving Shih Tzu, “Muffin.”

She was born on June 10, 1932, and raised in the Seagate community. She attended New Hanover High School, where she met her high school sweetheart and soulmate, James I. “Chink” Hines Jr. They were married Dec. 27, 1950.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chink; and parents, Silas Elwood Sneeden and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Norris.

Jane was a devoted homemaker and known for her famous macaroni and cheese, which she made for all friends and family gatherings. She loved traveling with friends and family, as well playing in their weekly card games. She was the beloved matriarch of the family and kept everyone in line.

Jane attended Oleander United Methodist Church, where she was a devoted member since 1972 after moving back to Wilmington with her family from Belton, South Carolina.

She is survived by her children, Irvin Hines (Donna) and Garry Hines (Kim); grandchildren, Reggie Hines (Leigh), Jason Hines (Katie), Jamie Hines Dodson (Wes) and Petty Officer 2nd Class (S.S.) Joshua Hines; great-grandchildren, Ashton, Carli, Taylor, Charley, Harper and Cameron. She also leaves behind Carolyn, Chunk, Tara and Bella Driver, Robert, Mandie, Anthony, Aaron, Reagan, Sarah and Airman 1st Class Tyler Griggs; as well as her extended church family.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, March 6, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel.
