Edwin Hoyle Sheffield died Monday, Feb. 10, 2020.
To know Ed was to love him. He was a gentle giant. A kind, selfless, humble man who always gave and rarely took. He worked hard his whole life, from a kid raised on a farm, to a Navy veteran, and then almost 40 years at G.E., often working a grueling schedule to provide for his family.
Ed had a dry wit and a wonderful sense of humor, which endeared him to those lucky enough to have crossed paths with him. He was an outdoorsman, passionate about golf, fishing, yard work and the beach. He loved action movies and Tom Clancy novels, and had a special affinity for hot dogs. He was, unsurprisingly, very fond of children and animals of all varieties.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary; son, Troy; daughter-in-law, Meredith; beloved granddaughter, June; brother and best friend, Randy; and a large extended family who loved him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, we believe Ed would prefer charitable donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and/or the NHRMC Heart Center Fund.
On behalf of Ed, his family would like to extend a special thanks to those in the medical field, who were so helpful to him through the past two-plus years. This includes the EMTs; the staff at both New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Duke Hospital; his primary care provider, Dr. Alfanador; and a few others who touched his heart with their kindness and support. Without these people, he would not have enjoyed this extended time with his family, nor would he have met his granddaughter. The family is eternally grateful, it’s a debt we’ll never be able to fully repay. Thank you.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 13, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, in Oakdale Cemetery.
Share online condolences with the family at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory.
