WILMINGTON — Darrell Lee Dismukes, 89, born Dec. 23, 1930, in Mountain Creek, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma Ree’ Garcia; stepfather, Trinidad Hernandez Garcia; sister, Olga M. Dismukes; brother, Roy Dismukes; and son, Darrell E. Dismukes.
Darrell served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a retired federal firefighter with Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal. He was also past president of the American Federation of Government Employees. After his retirement, he worked as a bridgetender at Figure Eight Island.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sharon R. Dismukes; daughter, Lisa Dismukes (Junior); son, Jason Dismukes, and his wife, Laura (Kathleen, Taryn); sisters, Heidi Denison (Gary, Russell and Scott) and Miriam Smith (John, Mitchell); sister-in-law, Annette Hale, and her husband, Jonny, (Angie, Matthew); and beloved dog, Opie.
Darrell was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Elks Lodge. He loved history and was a past member of the Wilmington Historical Society. He was surrounded by wonderful neighbors, especially Barbara Maultsby, Cindy and Harold Reed and Curt and Nancy Robert.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the ICU staff at NHRMC and to the nurses on the 10th floor for their support during Darrell’s time of need.
Born in the Depression, Darrell could do anything with dirt and seed. His favorite color was blue and his favorite song was “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” His gardens were as beautiful as his soul. He is greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
