Ira N. Kerns, 73, known for his positive outlook on life

Ira N. Kerns

Ira N. Kerns, 73, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at home surrounded by family.

Born Oct. 4, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Wilbur and Marjorie Kerns. A graduate of Riviera Beach High School (Florida), he developed his love of the water and the beach. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Western Kentucky University and had a successful career in sales and consulting.

He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and had served honorably in the U.S. Army as a Russian linguist. On May 20, 1972, he married the love of his life, Louise (Mayer), in Kentucky. Together, they welcomed five beautiful children, who were the most important part of his life.

Ira was a devoted husband and father; his true loves in life were his family and friends, golf, bowling, water activities, crosswords and Sudoku, scotch, Motown music and onion dip. Ira’s talents were many: woodworker, immaculate lawn-cutter and being Mr. Fixit. He was a strong man with a contagious smile, a true gentleman and maintained his positive outlook on life until the end.

He is survived by his wife, Louise, and their children, Christine (Adam) Allen, Brenda (Jase) Lawver, Laura Kerns, Steven (Victoria) Kerns and Matthew (Ashley) Kerns. Ira was the very proud Papa of Quentin, Kyra, Paige, Tyler, Ella, William, Samantha, Colbi, Zayden and Brody. He is also survived by his siblings, Bill (Judith), Robert (Sue) and Cheryl (Mark); and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17, at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory followed by a celebration of life service at 11 a.m. A Michigan service will be scheduled at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
