SOUTHPORT — Margaret Mary “Marge” Ward Lenihan, 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Bolivia, after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma and other serious medical issues.
Born on March 30, 1932, in Washington Heights, New York City, she graduated from Julia Richmond High School and attended Incarnation Catholic Church, New York City. Marge went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance company and met the love of her life, John Lenihan. They were married Sept. 13, 1952. She raised six children, happily living in the same house in the Village of the Branch, Smithtown, New York, for 53 years. In 2017, she and her husband relocated to Southport, moving to St. James Plantation.
Sadly, she was preceded in death by three sons, Kevin, Thomas and James.
Surviving children are John Lenihan (Kathy), Theresa Mills (Bob) and Kathleen Prettyman (Jeff) and their families. She has 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was a devout Catholic at St. Patrick’s RC Church, in Smithtown New York, for 53 years and was extremely active in the Catholic Daughters of America, ultimately serving as regent and then district deputy. She loved visiting her children and grandchildren, traveling, and keeping up with many friends. For many years, she and John spent the winter months in Isla Del Sol, Florida. She will fondly be remembered as a very loving, caring, compassionate person who was always willing to give and never expected anything in return.
A funeral Mass will be held at noon, Friday, Sept. 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Southport.
