Elizabeth H. ‘Betty’ Sauerbrey, 78, active with the Artisan’s Club

SOUTHPORT — Elizabeth H. “Betty” Sauerbrey, 78, was born Aug. 16, 1941, and passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Sauerbrey; daughter, Debra Brown (Sherry); step-daughter, Lori Constantine (Stuart); stepson, Robert Sauerbrey Jr. (Ashley); sisters, Peggy Thomas (Phil), Lois Pierson (Darrell), Doris Adams (Tom) and Sarah Perkins (Brent); brother, Albert Smith (Cindy); sister-in-law, Linda Smith; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold and Blanche Smith; brothers, Pete and Robert Smith; and sister-in-law, Nancy Falcone.

As a single parent, Betty was a proud graduate of Cornell University and received a master’s degree from Hofstra University. Betty and her daughter resided in Long Island, New York, where she taught for 28 years in the Massapequa School District.

Betty was fortunate enough to meet the love of her life, Robert, whom she married May 13, 2005. Shortly thereafter, they moved to the St. James community in Southport, where they fully enjoyed their retirement with the good fortune of many friends.

In the St. James community, Betty was an active participant in the Artisan’s Club, an avid golfer, participated in several social groups and volunteered at the library.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. James Chapel.
