WILMINGTON — Fonzo Cook, 70, passed away Monday, July 15, 2019, at Brunswick Cove Living Center, Winnabow.
He was born July 17, 1948, in Shelby to the late Lester Willard and Mary Watts Cook. Fonzo worked for Pat’s Tire Service and Browning Tire Town as a tire changer for over 40 years. He was the “fastest tire changer in the South.” An avid NASCAR fan, he never missed a race when Mark Martin was driving. He was a loving husband, father and paw-paw, who will be missed by many.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Virginia Lee House Cook; and grandchild, Cameron Lee Grubb.
He is survived by his son, Christopher Claude Cook; daughters, Melissa Cook Grubb, and her husband, John, Mary Cook and Kristina Walker; brothers, Willie Cook, Lester Cook Jr. and Jerry Cook; sister, Mary Kay McDonald, and her husband, Michael; grandchildren, Carra Elizabeth Grubb, Nathan Walker, Jordan Green and Brianah Walker; brother-in-law, Timothy Mack House, and his wife, Gina; and nieces, Samantha Johnson and Traci House.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 19, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Wilmington. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 20, at the funeral home with the Rev. Charles Trull officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery.
