WILMINGTON — Glenn Richard Smeal Sr., 77, passed away at his home Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, with his wife and son by his side. He was better known to his family simply as “Honey.” He was born June 20, 1941, in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania.

Glenn loved the Lord and his country very much. He was in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1972, and to this day, he would not go anywhere without wearing his Army hat. The main thing he gave his heart and soul to was his family. He was married to the love of his life, Anne for 56 years. He went with her everywhere. They were inseparable. They had one child, Glenn Jr., and his son loved him very much. They would talk or text on the phone every day.

Glenn was also known for his love of golf, playing the guitar, making birdhouses, driving his remote control vehicles and watching his grandchildren performing their activities. He would play golf with his son and grandsons, Glenn III and Nolan. They would always have a great time. Nolan and his granddad would always be more interested in a good conversation than what they scored.

When it came to his birdhouses, he would work on them in his garage, and he even got his wife involved. When someone saw his birdhouses and said they liked them, without a second thought, he would make one for them.

The most important thing for Glenn was to be involved with his grandchildren’s activities. He enjoyed watching Glenn III play golf, Maggie play tennis and Nolan play the trumpet.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; son, Glenn Smeal Jr., and his wife, Jennifer; grandchildren, Glenn III, Maggie and Nolan; mother and father, Marcella and Bob Bens; sister, Becky Ditoro; and sister-in-law, Mess Freeman.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Share online condolences with the family at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory.
