Nora Mills Parker, 87, found rewarding work through volunteer service

Nora Mills Parker, 87, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Nora was born May 28, 1931, in Bolivia to the late Edward A. Mills and Grady Johnson Mills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Clayton “Jim” Parker; son, William Clayton Parker; and sisters, Betty Mills Bass and Jacqueline Mills Simmons.

She is survived by her daughters, Nora Ellen Parker and Nancy Parker Stevens (John); and sister, Clara Mills Palmer.

Nora studied at Women’s College in Greensboro as well as East Carolina University and worked for over 20 years as the secretary and office manager for J.C. Parker House Moving. Yet her most rewarding work was her volunteer service through various ministries, including sewing dresses for girls in Haiti, wrapping hundreds of boxes for Operation Christmas Child and making puppets for the Methodist Home for Children.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, gospel music, travel and had a tremendous love of books and reading.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive, with the Rev. Bill Adams officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Oleander Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to The Handyman Ministry of Wrightsboro Baptist Church, 2736 Castle Hayne Road, Wilmington, NC 28401; Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort Inc., P.O. Box 111180, Nashville, TN 37222; Lower Cape Fear Hospice; or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The family also wishes to extend a special thank you to neighbors Charlie and Jeanette Futrell and Barbara Hill who Nora also considered part of her family.
