ASH — Lula M. Long, 87, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at Universal Health Care, Bolivia.
She was born Dec. 2, 1931, in Brunswick County, the daughter of the late Dorsey Smith and Gertrude Carlisle. Lula was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel William “D.W.” Long Jr.
Mrs. Long was a member of New Britton Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Lula was very active in her community. She was a substitute teacher at West Brunswick High School. She loved to cook, working with her hands in the garden and farming. Mrs. Long and her husband, D.W. Long, owned and operated Long’s General Store for many years in Ash.
Surviving are her son, Donnie Ray Long of Ash; daughter, Karen Gayle Long Rollins of Winterport, Maine; brother, James Albert Smith; two sisters, Gerlie Benton and Vivian Formyduval; granddaughter, Michelle Hines, and her husband, Steven C. Hines; and six great-grandchildren, Kristin Abel, Justin Fulford, Clay Hines, Tyler Hines, Curtis Todd and Brandon Todd.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at White Funeral and Cremation Service, Shallotte Chapel. Burial will follow in Whiteville Memorial Gardens. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Andrew Mitchell, Tyler Hardee, Justin Fulford, Clay Hines, Tyler Hines, Curtis Todd and Brandon Todd. Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Abel and Stephen Hardee.
