WILMINGTON — Jimmy Tyree Bowman, 83, passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, at his home.
Surviving family members include his wife, Kay L. Bowman; sons, Scott Bowman (Jan) and Randall Bowman (Jo); and grandsons, Grant Bowman, Troy Bowman and Craig Bowman.
Jimmy was born and raised in Winston-Salem, son of the late Harry James Bowman and Mary Williams Bowman. He graduated from Gray High School in 1953, and after attending Appalachian State for a year, enlisted in the U.S. Army. In the Army, he served in the 351st Regimental Combat Team at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Later, he was assigned to the 32nd Anti-Aircraft Brigade near London, England.
After his discharge in 1958, he attended Wake Forest University and earned a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, serving as president of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. In college, he met the love of his life, Kay Laferney, who was a student at the Woman’s College of North Carolina, now UNC-Greensboro. After graduating in 1960, Jimmy worked as an insurance adjuster for Crawford and Company in Fayetteville, Sanford and Durham. He later worked as a worker’s compensation manager for Duke University Medical Center, retiring in 1996.
Jimmy was a loving husband and father to sons, Scott and Randall. He enjoyed playing tennis, running races and spending time with his family. After retirement, he and Kay moved to Pittsboro, and then Wilmington, to spend time with grandsons, Grant, Troy and Craig. He will be remembered as a kind man who loved his family and had a mischievous sense of humor. He was greatly loved by family, friends and neighbors. He leaves his family with the gifts of love and humor, and he will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Davis Community, 1011 Porters Neck Road, Wilmington. Phone: (910) 686-7195. The family will gather in the solarium in the administration building.
